At 7.30 a.m. on Friday, the flow of the Krishna river at the Prakasam barrage exceeded 3.97 lakh cusecs downstream into the sea, prompting water resource officials to issue the first flood alert.
As a further rise in the water level at the barrage was forecast, officials deployed additional observers and directed flood duty officers to stay on vigil all along the river course upstream and downstream of the barrier.
With a large amount of floodwater being discharged downstream from the barrage, Vijayawada city police commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata directed all police stations to notify people in flood-affected areas as well as in mountainous areas for rock falls in order to avoid any unfortunate incidents. People who live in low-lying areas are also encouraged to relocate to safer locales.
Meanwhile, as the water level rises, the water resources authorities released 4.32 lakh cusecs of water from the barrage into the sea and canals around 9 p.m. by opening all 70 gates at the barrage.
